The School of Agriculture originated from Jiangxi Industrial School in 1905. The undergraduate education began in the Department of Agriculture of National Chungcheng University founded in 1940. In 1994, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Horticulture and the Department of Plant Protection of Jiangxi Agricultural University merged to form the School of Agriculture. The school has four departments—Agronomy, Horticulture,Plant Protection, and Plant Science and Technology, and one national Experimental Teaching Center for Plant Protection. There are 9 teaching and research sections, namely, Crop Cultivation and Farming, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Fruit Trees, Vegetables, Plant Pathology and Chemical Protection, Insects, Plants, Plant Physiology and Tea Science. There are 1,608 full-time undergraduates, 461 full-time postgraduates and 202 part-time postgraduates. 80 are working on their doctoral programs, including 6 international postgraduates.
Faculty: there are 154 faculty members, 136 full-time teachers,29 professors and researchers, including 12 Secondary post professor, 49 associate senior titles, 81 tutors for postgraduate students, 23 doctoral tutors, and 112 teachers with doctoral degrees. Discipline construction: there is a mobile post-doctoral research station of crop science, one doctoral point of the first-level discipline for crop science, and four doctoral points of the second-level discipline, which is crop cultivation and farming, crop genetics and breeding, crop protection and agricultural ecology. Four first-level master's degree programs, which is crop science, horticulture, plant protection and ecology, ten second-level master's degree programs, which are crop cultivation and farming, crop genetics and breeding, ecology, zoology, genetics, pomology, vegetable science, agricultural insect and pest control, plant pathology and pesticide science, and two agriculture master’s enrollment field, which are Agronomy and Seed Industry, Agricultural Management. There are 7 undergraduate majors, which are Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Seed Science and Engineering, Tea Science, Animal and Plant Quarantine, and Intelligent Agriculture. The major of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Protection is a national first-class professional construction point.
The first-level discipline of crop science is the first-class discipline of Jiangxi Agricultural University. It has experienced key disciplines, high-level disciplines and first-class disciplines of Jiangxi Province, and has been selected as the first-class discipline growth and peak characteristic discipline in Jiangxi Province. The first-level discipline of Jiangxi Province's 12th Five-Year, which is horticulture and plant protection, and the master's degree of horticulture is the demonstration master's point of Jiangxi Province's 12th Five-Year. It has mobile post-doctoral research station of crop science, national experimental teaching center of plant production, 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Jiangxi Province for modern production of double-cropping rice, 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Jiangxi Province for key technologies and quality safety of post-harvest processing of fruits and vegetables. It has established the key laboratory of crop physiological ecology and genetic breeding of the Ministry of Education, the key laboratory of crop physiological ecology and genetic breeding of Jiangxi Province (Nanchang), the key laboratory of fruits and vegetables preservation and non-destructive testing of Jiangxi Province, the key laboratory of potato and taro biology of Jiangxi Province, the national rice engineering laboratory and the super rice engineering technology research center of Jiangxi Province. The Southern Grain and Oil Crops Collaborative Innovation Center, which was established as the core collaborative unit, was identified as the national 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center in 2014.
There are two excellent teaching teams in Jiangxi Province: Crop Cultivation and Farming Teaching Team, Agricultural Insect and Pest Control Teaching Team; an excellent scientific and technological innovation team of the Ministry of Agriculture: double cropping rice germplasm innovation and breeding innovation team; two advantageous scientific and technological innovation teams in Jiangxi Province: Super Rice Breeding Theory and Technology Research Team, Fruit and Vegetable Preservation and Non-destructive Testing Research Team; one of the first batch of scientific and technological innovation teams in universities in Jiangxi Province: Rice Genetic Breeding Research Team; a provincial women's civilization team: potato taro germplasm resources innovation and utilization team.
Talent cultivation and science-technology support for agriculture: In recent years, 7 first-class awards and 2 second-class awards in the provincial teaching achievement awards was presented to the school, which has made outstanding achievements in the construction of excellent courses and multimedia courseware. Adhering to the combination of teaching, scientific research and production, the school has established some off-campus teaching and research practice bases, such as the Plant Protection Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China Rice Research Institute, Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Jiangxi Tianya Seed Industry Co., Ltd.etc..accumulated more than 100 scientific and technological achievements.
Scientific research: Since the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken more than 300 scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, with a scientific research expenditure of more than 200 million yuan. Among them, the National Natural Science Foundation has maintained more than 20 projects for many years. As the first completion unit, Breeding and Demonstration and Promotion of New Varieties of Double Cropping Super Rice in Jiangxi” won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The scientific-technological achievements participated in the completion have won one special prize and three second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. It has won more than 30 provincial and ministerial scientific-technological achievements awards including the first prize of provincial natural science, and has published more than 800 scientific research papers. Successfully cultivated Ganxin 688, Wufengyou T025, Taiyou 871 and other national super rice varieties, Ganqi No.3 national navel orange new varieties, Ganmi No.6 national kiwifruit new varieties, as well as 16 new crop varieties such as corn, cowpea and watermelon. The market demand of new colorful rape lines is strong, which has become a beautiful scenery in the spring of the school.
Students' quality: The school pays attention to strengthening the cultivation of students’ innovative and entrepreneurial ability, and carries out rich and colorful campus cultural activities relying on the Youth League Committee, the Student Union and the Student Association to improve the comprehensive quality of school students. In the past five years, undergraduate students have published 28 high-level papers and been granted 11 patents. They have won more than 200 provincial and ministerial awards in various innovation and entrepreneurship, extracurricular science-technology competitions and learning competitions. Especially in 2022, the student team won the national gold medal of the Internet + college students' innovation and entrepreneurship competition. This is the first time that our school has won the national silver medal of the Internet + college students' innovation and entrepreneurship competition in 2021, and has achieved a historic breakthrough in this competition again.
