Jiangxi Agricultural University (JXAU) is located in the northern part of Nanchang, Jiangxi province, covering 16,000 mu (about 1,067 hectares). It is jointly established by four national and provincial departments.
JXAU is one of the oldest universities in Jiangxi, whose history can date back to 1905 when Jiangxi Industrial School was founded. Undergraduate education started with the establishment of National Chungcheng University in 1940. The university was renamed Nanchang University in 1949 and Jiangxi Communist Labor University in 1968, which，in 1969, was merged with Agricultural College founded in 1952. In November 1980, the university was renamed Jiangxi Agricultural University.
JXAU is one of the first universities in China to confer bachelor’s and master’s programs and the first university in Jiangxi to confer postgraduate programs. Currently composed of 17 schools, with more than 24,000 full-time students, it is committed to research and education in disciplines covering 9 major categories, namely agronomy, science, engineering, economics, management, liberal arts, law, education and art. It offers doctorate programs for 6 first-level disciplines, master’s degree programs for 21 first-level disciplines, professional master’s degree programs for 9 disciplines and undergraduate programs for 59 majors. Among them, 1 discipline is listed among key disciplines with support from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, 4 are listed among first-class disciplines named by Jiangxi province, 11 majors have been awarded provincial first-class majors of Jiangxi, 13 majors are listed as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 4 majors are listed as national first-class specialty and 9 majors are listed as provincial-level characteristic majors. It also has 4 national experimental demonstration teaching centers and national practical teaching bases, 1 virtual teaching and research office of the Ministry of Education, and 4 post-doctoral scientific research mobile stations.
With the advantage in agriculture featuring biotechnology and coordinated multidisciplinary development, JXAU is committed to scientific research. It has founded the first independently-established state key laboratory of pig genetic improvement and production technology in Jiangxi province, 41 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological innovation platforms, including the National Engineering Laboratory, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Key Laboratory of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (Engineering Technology Center), provincial key laboratories (engineering technology research centers), a reserve for major scientific and technological innovation platforms in Jiangxi Province, provincial engineering laboratories (research centers), and key innovation centers for the integration of production and education. It also has 9 high-quality scientific research platforms such as national collaborative innovation centers, provincial collaborative innovation centers, and 6 provincial think tanks.Since 2016, it has won 62 scientific research awards, and was the first in Jiangxi province to undertake a major project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and key agricultural core technology research projects. 3 disciplines of the university have entered the top 1% of ESI in the world.JXAU has established strategic cooperation and sci-tech cooperation relations with more than 80 percent of the counties in Jiangxi, and has promoted a large number of excellent varieties and modern agricultural technologies with independent intellectual property rights.
The university currently has 1,859 teaching and administrative staff, including 80 national talents represented by two academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 245 provincial and ministerial-level talents, and 7 national excellent teachers. 18 teaching teams have been awarded the titles of National Innovation Team, National Excellent Teaching Team, Provincial Innovation Team, and Provincial Excellent Teaching Team.JXAU adheres to the mutual development of teaching and research, and has achieved outstanding results in talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, cultural transmission and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation. Since the establishment of the university, it has cultivated more than 350,000 talents for various fields represented by 13 academicians and more than 100 outstanding talents. Many graduates have become the backbones of agricultural production, management and technology dissemination.
