HistoryThe School of Food Science and Engineering originated from the major of Agricultural and Livestock Products Processing founded in 1986. Today, with one primary academic program in Food Science and Engineering, the school offers undergraduate programs for two majors: Food Science and Engineering as well as Food Quality and Safety, three secondary master’s programs: Food Science, Agricultural Products Processing and Storage Engineering, Food Nutrition and Safety, along with one professional master program in Food Processing and Safety. It was awarded the secondary doctoral degree program for Safe Production and Processing Engineering of Livestock Products in 2019. The major of Food Science and Engineering is the key construction major of the university, which was listed as one of the brand majors of Jiangxi Province in 2002 and one of the special majors of Jiangxi Province in 2008. In addition, it was selected as one of the first-class characteristic major construction programs of national higher education institutions by the Ministry of Education in March 2008. The major of Food Science and Engineering is also one of the top-notch majors of the 12th Five-Year Plan and the 13th Five-Year Plan of Jiangxi Higher Education Institutions. In 2019, it was selected as a national top-notch professional construction program. In 2022, it passed the professional certification of engineering education in China, and the major of Food Quality and Safety was selected as a provincial top-notch professional construction program.

FacultyThe school currently hosts 64 faculty members including 18 professors and 21 associate professors, of whom 44 have doctoral degrees and 15 have master’s degrees. In addition, 2 were honored with “Jiangxi Double Thousand Program”, 3 were honored with “Jiangxi academic and technical leaders of major disciplines”, 1 was honored with “Jiangxi 100 million talents”, 1 was honored with “Jiangxi Jinggang Scholar Specially Appointed Professor”, 1 was honored with “Jiangxi Double High Project talent”, 3 were honored with “Jiangxi Distinguished Young”, 1 was honored with “Jiangxi Young Scientist Training Object”, 1 was honored with “Jiangxi Young Jinggang Scholar” and 4 were honored with “Jiangxi Agricultural Industry System post experts”.

StudentsThe School of Food Science and Engineering recruits students from more than 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. Currently, our school enrolls 543 undergraduate students. Since it was established, it has altogether produced more than 3,000 graduates. Over the past three years, the proportion of graduates who have successfully passed the entrance examination for graduate school has been maintained at more than 50%, and the employment rate has been among the top-ranking of the university for many years. In 2022, the rate of initial employment and the rate of graduates who have succeeded in entering a graduate school reached 86.6% and 50.6% respectively. Most graduates have found employments as civil servants, master's degree students and employees of the food industry and related enterprises. At present, the number of postgraduates has increased to 182 with 1.8 papers published per capita, 18 of which were awarded the provincial postgraduate innovation fund project, 14 were awarded the excellent thesis of the university, more than 10 were awarded the excellent master's thesis of the province, and the selection rate of excellent master's thesis was 100%, as well as more than 30 of which were offered admission to Ph.D. program of Zhejiang University, China Agricultural University, South China University of Technology, Jiangnan University through application and examination. Graduates always have solid theoretical foundation, strong practical ability and strong competitive ability in employment. Most of them have become backbones of production technology and middle/senior managements in the food industry and food-related enterprises.

ConditionsOur school has laboratories with a construction area of nearly 7000 m2, including Jiangxi Agricultural Products Storage and Processing Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Natural Products and Functional Foods, Jiangxi Agricultural Products Processing and Safety Control Engineering Laboratory and Nanchang Agricultural Products Processing and Quality Control Key Laboratory. It has a well-functioning virtual simulation laboratory and sensory evaluation laboratory, with instruments and equipment worth more than 30 million CNY. Large-scale collaborative projects have been conducted with many companies and public institutions, including the Food and Drug Administration of Jiangxi Province, the Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau of Jiangxi Province, etc. And we have more than 40 off-campus practical training bases and 3 on-campus practical training bases.

Scientific ResearchCommitted to talent cultivation, scientific research and technological development, we have formed a teaching and research team with unity and dedication, featuring provincial discipline leaders, broad research fields, reasonable talent echelon structure, outstanding teaching achievements and obvious characteristics of schooling. Over the past 5 years, great achievements have been achieved as follows. We have obtained more than 50 national scientific research projects and more than 150 provincial and ministerial projects, received a total funding of more than 50 million CNY for various projects, and published more than 600 academic papers, among which more than 100 are SCI papers. Apart from above, we have also won 1 second-class prize and 5 third-class prizes for Scientific and Technology Progress of Jiangxi Province, 7 second-class and third-class prizes for Scientific and Technology Achievements of Jiangxi University. More importantly, we have attained 24 national invention patents and have succeeded in transferring 14 scientific research achievements.

TeachingThe project of exploration of Breaking Walls, Cross-border IntegrationFood+ Engineering Talent Cultivation Modeand the project of exploration and practice of Industry-Teaching Integration and School-Enterprise Collaborative Education Mechanism for Food Specialties in Local Agricultural Colleges and Universities were awarded the first and second batches of New Engineering Research and Practice Construction Projects issued by the Ministry of Education respectively, and our school undertook the project of Excellent Engineer training program of Jiangxi Provincial Education Department. The courses of Animal Products Processing, Fruit and Vegetable Processing, Food Analysis and Testing Technology, Food Biochemistry, Food Chemistry, Chemical Principle (Upper) and Food Additives are the top- ranking courses in Jiangxi Province. Over the past five years, our school has hosted more than 30 provincial teaching research projects and 60 school-level teaching research projects, and won the first batch of New Engineering Construction Projects of the Ministry of Education.Besides, our school has won 6 school-level teaching achievement awards and more than 10 first and second prizes in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions above the provincial level.

Science and Technology ServicesRelying on the teaching and research platform of the discipline, our school strives to promote the level of enterprise services and transformation of scientific and technological achievements, breaking through the difficulties in food processing, safety testing technology and food-related fields. It has provided more than 50 patents and technical achievements for the industry through patent licensing and technology transfer, and developed more than 100 new products and solutions to solve key technical problems for enterprises. Meanwhile, our faculty members also carry out industry-academia-research cooperations with relevant enterprises through post experts, sci-tech commissioners and other ways, aiming to help enterprises solve production problems effectively, and to assist the development of potatoes, fruits and vegetables, eggs, aquatic products and other industries of Jiangxi Province.

Academic ExchangesAttaching great importance to foreign exchanges and collaborations, we have established long-term scientific research and talent training projects with both domestic and foreign scientific research institutes, including the University of Longston (USA), the University of Guelph (Canada), the University of Leeds (UK), the China Agricultural University, the Huazhong Agricultural University, the Nanchang University, the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. Experts and scholars from a dozen countries and regions have come to visit our School and conduct academic exchanges. At the same time, we have sent many people abroad for study and academic visits, which has promoted the development of teaching and scientific research.
