The School of Biological Sciences and Engineering was formed by merging the Biotechnology Research and Development Center with the Microbiology Teaching and Research Unit. The school began offering undergraduate programs in Microbiology in 1998 and in Bioengineering in 1999, establishing the Department of Bioengineering. It was renamed the School of Biological Sciences and Engineering in 2006. In 2003, the school started recruiting master’s degree students. Since its establishment, the school has produced nearly 4,000 graduates, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students, from 30 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) across China. It currently has 1,149 undergraduate students and 202 postgraduate students.
The school currently has 79 faculty members, including 10 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 7 doctoral supervisors, and 35 master’s supervisors. There are 33 senior title holders and 11 external part-time professors, and 57 have doctoral degrees. The school has a laboratory area of 4,000 square meters and a modern teaching and training base of 3000 square meters, with total equipment assets of more than 35 million yuan. The school has two provincial key laboratories: the Agricultural Microbial Resource Development and Utilization Engineering Laboratory in Jiangxi Province and the Key Laboratory of Conservation and Utilization of Fungal Resources in Jiangxi Province, as well as four municipal key laboratories: the Key Laboratory of Fermentation Application Technology in Nanchang city, the Key Laboratory of Conservation and Utilization of Biological Resource in Nanchang City, the Key Laboratory of Animal Virus and Genetic Engineering in Nanchang City and the Key Laboratory of Edible and Medicinal Fungi in Nanchang City. In addition, there are seven school-level research institutions, one provincial demonstration center for experimental education, one school-level demonstration center for experimental education and other teaching and research platforms.
The school has three undergraduate majors: bioengineering, pharmaceutical engineering and biotechnology. The bioengineering major ranked first in the comprehensive evaluation of provincial university majors in Jiangxi Province in 2015, was selected as a First-class advantageous specialty in Jiangxi Province in 2018 and a national First-class specialty in 2019. The pharmaceutical engineering major ranked second in the comprehensive evaluation of provincial majors in 2017. Biotechnology is a provincial characteristic major and was rated excellent in the provincial first-class program acceptance in 2020. Pharmaceutical Engineering was rated as a first-class characteristic program in Jiangxi Province in 2022. Bioengineering ranked second in the second round of comprehensive evaluation of programs in Jiangxi Province in 2022. The school has two primary disciplines: Biology and Bioengineering, and has academic master's programs in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biophysics, and Bioengineering. It also has a professional master's degree program in the field of biology and medicine. Biology is a key discipline and demonstrative master's degree program in Jiangxi Province in 2011-2015, a key constructive and doctoral program discipline of school in 2016-2020. Bioengineering is a key and doctoral program construction discipline of school in 2016-2020.
The school insists on the integration and coordinated development of disciplines and majors, teaching and research. It actively promotes the undergraduate mentorship program, builds and improves the guarantee system of teaching and research platforms, and devotes to the construction of the teaching staff and the cultivation of students’ practical abilities. The teachers in this school have presided over 73 national level and 96 provincial level scientific research projects, published 3 monographs, and edited or co-edited 6 textbooks. There have been plentiful awards in this school, including a third prize of the mass entrepreneurship and innovation of the Western Returned Scholars Association, three second prizes and two third prizes of science and technology achievement awards in Jiangxi Province, three second prize of teaching achievement awards in Jiangxi Province, six awards of science and technology achievement held by universities in Jiangxi Province. The school has also been authorized with 11 national invention patents and numerous papers were published, of which about 400 papers were included in SCI or domestic core journals.
The rate of students pursuing further education through graduate entrance exams has always been among the top in the university, reaching 47.01 percent in 2023. In recent years, we have won many provincial and national awards in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions such as the Chuangqingchun, Challenge Cup and Internet+ competitions. We have also won many other awards such as the championship of the national micro-film competition with the theme of “Caring for problems of Farmer, Countryside and Agriculture” , the grand prize of the Jiangxi division of the national English competition for college students, and the first prize of the biological skills competition in Jiangxi province and the national wine tasting competition for college students. And in the national summer volunteer Social practice of college students’ bringing culture, technology and healthcare skills to the countryside social practice activity, our team has been rated as the most beautiful team in the activity called “Thousand Schools, Thousand Projects”.
