The School can be traced back to the Agricultural Economics at Jiangxi Agricultural College in 1952 and the Agricultural Economics at Jiangxi Communist Labor University in 1958. The Agricultural Economics resumed enrollment in 1984, and it established the School of Economics and Trade, which was approved by the former Jiangxi Provincial Education Commission in June 1994. In March 2012, it was renamed as the School of Economics and Management.
The School is currently made up of five departments, namely Agricultural Economics, Accounting, Economics and Trade, Business Administration and Finance. There are six majors offered, including Agricultural and Forestry Economics Management, Economics, Accounting, International Economics and Trade, Business Administration and Finance. And the first three are branded majors of universities in Jiangxi Province. Besides the teaching and research section directly under each department, the School also includes Financial Management Teaching and Research Section, International Trade Teaching and Research Section, Marketing Teaching and Research Section, Laboratory Management Center and MPACC Education Center. The school has 1 postdoctoral mobile station, 1 first-level doctoral program, 3 first-level academic master’s programs, 9 second-level academic master’s programs and 2 professional master’s programs. As of September 2023, the School has more than 3,200 students.
Majors in the School have prominent advantages and distinctive characteristics. Agricultural Economics and Management and Accounting are national first-class specialty. Agricultural Economics and Management is listed as national and provincial first-class characteristic majors. The discipline of Agricultural Economics and Management is a key discipline in Jiangxi Province during the “Tenth Five-Year Plan,” “Eleventh Five-Year Plan,” and “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” periods.
The master’s degree program in Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management is an exemplary program in Jiangxi Province during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” and “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” periods. The Agricultural Economics and Management has been approved as primary doctoral program in 2018, and as the primary postdoctoral research station in 2019, which was divided into three major fields: Agricultural Economics and Management, Agricultural and Forestry Resources and Environmental Management, and Rural Society and Rural Governance. The major of Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management was rated as a five-star major, while Accounting and International Economics and Trade were rated as four-star majors in the 2022 comprehensive evaluation of undergraduate majors in universities of Jiangxi Province.
As of June 2022, the school has over 130 faculty members, including 63 with doctoral degrees, 23 with senior professional titles, 18 with associate senior professional titles, 15 doctoral supervisors (including 2 external part-time supervisors), 136 master’s supervisors (including over 80 external supervisors), 1 academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences whom was flexibly introduced, 2 recipients of special allowances from the State Council, 2 members of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Agricultural Economics and Management of the Ministry of Education, 1 young talent from the “Shennong Talent” program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 31 provincial and ministerial-level talents represented by distinguished professors of Jing Gang Scholars, and 2 excellent teachers represented by The Great Beinong Teaching Excellence Award. The school also has 1 high-level undergraduate teaching team in Jiangxi Province, 1 youth innovation team in social sciences in Jiangxi Province, and an excellent counselor workshop in Jiangxi Province.
Currently, the School has two provincial teaching teams, one provincial teaching master, and has developed four provincial quality courses. The experimental teaching conditions at the School of Economics and Management have been continuously improved. The School has a provincial demonstration center-the Economics and Management Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, which includes six experimental platforms: the “Finance and Accounting Research Center” in collaboration with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Jiangxi Branch, the VBSE Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Training Center, the Management Comprehensive Laboratory, the Accounting Manual Simulation Laboratory, the Accounting by Electronic Data Processing, the International Trade and Finance Laboratory, and the Business Operation Sand Table Simulation Laboratory. In addition, the School has established over 20 off-campus internship bases in collaboration with various enterprises and institutions.
The School has several research institutions of the national, provincial, and university levels, including the jointly constructed New Rural Development Research Institute by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Jiangxi Collaborative Innovation Center for Decision Support in Sustainable Development of Modern Agriculture and its Advantageous Industries (2011 Collaborative Innovation Center), the Key High-end Think Tank for Rural Revitalization Strategy in Jiangxi Province, the Key Research Base for Social Sciences in Jiangxi Province - Jiangxi Rural Development Research Center, the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences in Jiangxi Province - “Three Rural Issues” Research Center, the Soft Science Innovation Base in Jiangxi Province - Jiangxi Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation and Development Soft Science Innovation Base, as well as the Rural Economy Research Institute, Immigration Research Center, Rural E-commerce Research Center, and Agricultural Technology Policy Innovation Research Center, among other university-level research institutions.
Since the resumption of enrollment in 1984, the School has cumulatively produced over 15,000 students. Its alumni can be found both at home and abroad. In recent years, a number of outstanding alumni have emerged, receiving national honorary titles and being selected as Distinguished Professor of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program. Some alumni have taken on leadership positions at various levels, while others are actively involved in teaching, scientific research, and administrative management, making significant contributions to economic and social development. In recent years, students have received a number of national and provincial awards, and some students have been admitted to prestigious universities for further study. The employment rate and job quality have significantly improved.
In response to the national and provincial rural revitalization strategy, the School has implemented a strategic framework cooperation agreement with China Agricultural Policy Research Center of Peking University, and successfully established the provincial key high-end think tank - Jiangxi Rural Revitalization Strategy Research Institute. With the support of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Jiangxi Branch, the School has made brilliant achievements in talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services. Through talent cultivation, cooperative research, hosting forums and international academic conferences, the School has established cooperative relationships with domestic and foreign educational and research institutions. The School has also been approved for the special talent cultivation program for rural revitalization by the China Scholarship Council.
In the past five years, the School has undertaken more than 40 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences planning project. The publication of high-quality papers, both domestically and internationally, has significantly increased. The school has also received one Outstanding Achievement Award for Young Researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the 8th Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Awards and 12 provincial-level Excellent Social Science Awards.
