The college of Bioscience and Bioengineering at Jiangxi Agricultural University was established through the merger of the Biotechnology Research and Development Center and the Microbiology Teaching and Research Office. The school began enrolling undergraduate students in Microbiology in 1998 and in Biological Engineering in 1999. Concurrently, the Department of Biological Engineering was established, which was later renamed the college of Bioscience and Bioengineering . Postgraduate and Doctor recruitment commenced in 2003 and 2025, respectively. Since its inception, the school has cultivated nearly 4,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students have been drawn from 30 provinces (municipalities directly under the Central Government and autonomous regions) across the country. Currently, there are 1,183 undergraduates and 254 postgraduate students enrolled.

The college currently has 87 faculty and staff members. Among them, there are 12 individuals recognized at the provincial and ministerial levels, including National Young Top Talents and Ganpao Talents (top talents from Jiangxi Province), 9 doctoral supervisors, and 46 master's supervisors; 38 individuals with senior professional titles, and 11 external part-time professors; and 62 individuals holding doctoral degrees. The college boasts 4,000 square meters of laboratory space and 3,000 square meters of modern teaching and training facilities, with total equipment assets exceeding 35 million yuan.The college is home to two provincial key laboratories: the Jiangxi Agricultural Microbial Resources Development and Utilization Engineering Laboratory and the Jiangxi Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbial Germplasm Discovery and Utilization. It also has four municipal key laboratories in Nanchang, which include the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Fermentation Application Technology, the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Bioresource Conservation and Utilization, the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Animal Virus and Genetic Engineering, and the Nanchang Key Laboratory of Medicinal Mushrooms. Additionally, there are seven university-level research institutes. The college also features a provincial-level demonstration center for experimental teaching and a university-level demonstration center for experimental teaching.

Our department currently offers three undergraduate majors: Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Biotechnology.The Bioengineering major ranked first in its category in the comprehensive evaluation of majors at universities in Jiangxi Province in 2015. In 2018, it was selected as a "First-Class Advantage Major in Jiangxi Province." In 2019, it was designated as a national first-class major construction point. In 2020, it received an "excellent" rating in the provincial first-class major assessment. In 2022, it ranked second in its category in the second round of the comprehensive evaluation of majors at universities in Jiangxi Province and was awarded the "Four-Star Major" title. In 2023, it passed engineering accreditation and was approved as an advantage major in the university's "14th Five-Year Plan.The Pharmaceutical Engineering major ranked second in its category in the comprehensive evaluation of majors at universities in Jiangxi Province in 2017. In 2022, it was rated as a first-class featured major. In 2023, it was approved as a potential major in the university's '14th Five-Year Plan.The Biotechnology major is a provincial characteristic major and an advantage major in the university's '14th Five-Year Plan'. In 2024, it joined the 2+2 double degree joint training program as part of the 'Chinese and Foreign High-Level University Student Exchange Program', partnering with the University of Queensland, Australia, to jointly train undergraduates in Biotechnology. Our department has two first-level disciplines: Biology and Bioengineering. It offers academic doctor’s degree program in Biology and master's degree programs in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Biophysics and Bioengineering. Additionally, it provides professional master's degree programs in Biology and Medicine. Among them, Biology is a key discipline and a demonstrative master's program in Jiangxi Province during the '12th Five-Year Plan', a key discipline in the establishment of new doctoral programs in Jiangxi Province, and a key discipline in the university's '13th Five-Year Plan' and '14th Five-Year Plan' as an advantage discipline. Bioengineering is a key discipline of the university's '13th Five-Year Plan.

The college is committed to the close integration and coordinated development of disciplines and specialties, as well as teaching and scientific research. It actively promotes the 'undergraduate mentorship system,' continually builds and improves the support system for teaching and research platforms, and places a strong emphasis on the development of the teaching faculty and the cultivation of students' practical abilities.The college has received three second prizes for teaching achievements in Jiangxi Province, published three monographs, and edited or co-edited six textbooks. In recent years, the college's faculty have led 83 national and 108 provincial scientific research projects.The college has won 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes for scientific and technological achievements in Jiangxi Province; 1 third prize in the second 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship' Competition of the European and American Students' Association (Chinese Overseas Students' Association); and 6 first, second, and third prizes for scientific and technological achievements among colleges and universities in Jiangxi Province. Additionally, the college has been granted 11 national invention patents and published 6 books in SCI-indexed journals. Furthermore, it has published over 400 papers in SCI-indexed and domestic core journals.

The college adheres to the principles of 'Three-Wide Education' and 'Five-Fold Education', using academic competitions as a platform to enhance students' innovative abilities, and social practice as a medium to establish the campus culture brand 'Times with Glimmer'. Furthermore, it strengthens academic integrity by focusing on postgraduate examinations and promotions, thereby comprehensively enhancing the quality of talent development. In recent years, our college has emerged a large number of outstanding teachers and students, who were awarded titles of Jiangxi Youth May Fourth Medalists, the Province's outstanding Communist Youth League cadres, Jiangxi Province’s excellent Psychological committee of Colleges and Universities, “Star of Jiangnong” and so forth; the college postgraduate’s enrolment rate for five consecutive years rising year by year and reaching 49.15% in 2024; the students' comprehensive quality and innovation ability have been further improved, and they have achieved excellent results in various events, such as the National Microfilm Competition of “Affection for the Three Rural Areas”, the National Student Life Science Competition, the National Student English Competition, the National Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the National Student Wine Tasting Competition, the Jiangxi Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the Jiangxi Biological Skills Competition. “Three to the Country”summer social practice was evaluated as the national excellent team, Jiangxi Province excellent team, excellent practice achievements of Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education civilised practice of voluntary service action, advanced individuals, the excellent cloud travel works and the second prize in field walks of Jiangxi Province’s Red Walks.
